During the dog days of summer at your local surf spot know that World class surfing is waiting for you in Southern Bali.  From LAX, fly Singapore airlines (best airline) to Singapore, Bali is only a 3 hour flight from Singapore.  Usually your hotel will set up transport for you at the airport.  I wouldn't bother trying to rent a car, the roads are crazy.  You can hire someone with local knowledge of surf breaks, restaurants, and transportation to drive you all around in Bali, it is cheap and worth it, usually you'll make a friend.  There is a World of things to check out and do in Bali.
